New music champion and recipient of the Chamber Music America Commissioning Grant, violinist and composer-improvisor Tom Chiu has performed over 200 premieres worldwide by influential musicians including Ornette Coleman, Fast Forward, David First, Dan Joseph, Oliver Lake, Alvin Lucier, Michael Schumacher, Henry Threadgill, and the late Muhal Richard Abrams. Chiu has also created mixed-media works with choreographer Pam Tanowitz, video artists Phill Niblock and Ken Jacobs, vocalist Jaap Blonk, balloonist Judy Dunaway, and Mabou Mines director Lee Breuer. His original works, dedicated to Joan La Barbara, Sylvere Lotringer, Bobby Few, JCC Trio, OpenEnded Group and others, have been premiered at the BBC, Mount Tremper Arts, EMPAC, Roulette, STEIM Amsterdam, Walker Art Center, Bang-on-a-Can Marathon, MOMA PS1, Museum of the Moving Image, and Anthology Film Archives. As the founder of the FLUX Quartet, Chiu has led an influential ensemble which has become “legendary for its furiously committed, untiring performances.” (Alex Ross)  He has an upcoming 2-cd album release on XI Records, titled TOM CHIU: THE LIVE ONE.
